Phillipsburg - CaribServe and UTS announce the launch of their new WiMAX 4G broadband network, which is the newest, fastest and most modern alternative in wireless broadband on St. Maarten.

WiMAX, which stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a fourth generation (4G) wireless digital communication system that provides broadband wireless access over extended distances to fixed, portable and fully mobile access devices. The technology, which is also known as 802.16, allows for more efficient bandwidth usage, interference avoidance and enforcement of Quality of Service right down to the end-user's service level. WiMAX can provide access up to several miles, as opposed to WiFi, which in most cases has a reach of only 100-300 feet.

PHILIPSBURG-MONDAY, 26 APRIL - The Daily Herald
The recently approved telecommunications market analysis for St. Maarten, conducted in 2009, shows that United Telecommunications Services (UTS) commanded a greater share of the mobile telephone market than TelCell as of 2009, even if by a small margin. UTS commands 49 per cent of the market, while TelCell commands 48.3 per cent. The market analysis was conducted by JRJ Inc. and Prescod & Associates, and was approved by the Executive Council on April 8. It also concluded that no more additional telecommunications network licences should be made available for new parties to establish independent (copper or fibre optic) line-based facilities and that three mobile service providers "seem appropriate" for St. Maarten.

One of those services has been internet provision. It takes big company courage to look at something it is providing and say it is not happy with it. The service needed to be improved and to do that would be a big investment. Instead we have done our homework and after a survey we established that without doubt Caribserve is the best internet service on the island. Because of that we instigated some negotiations and an offer was made. That offer has been accepted." Carty refused to answer the question as to what the deal had cost other than to say "We have used some of our profits to make this investment as we told you we would. This is an investment in the future and will be fantastic for our customers."
